‘An old saying acknowledges that all who contribute to the advancement of science stand on the shoulders of their predecessors and, even if they are not aware of this or prefer not to be aware of it, cannot really judge the value of their own contributions without it. The task of evaluating the merits of one’s predecessors from a study of the original literature is, however, often time-consuming and sometimes difficult. It is therefore praiseworthy that the Editors of Helvetica Chimica Acta have prompted several authors to publish review articles about the papers that have appeared in this journal since its foundation.
